AND

And are concerned about food and water in India in the future, I would be interested in hearing from you.

  1. Odd–why not just people inteterested in the same things? Surpirsed call only to Indians–as much value diversity/range within Indians as the whole world–Muslims? Seiks? Makes sense on one level but it would be like some us calling all Jews/Swedes/Frenchmen for opportunities…..Curious why that is the credential sought.

  2. Hi Robert —

    Charity begins at home…
India is going to be one of the places most hard hit by global food and water shortage..
Africa at least doesn’t have the population pressure..and besides, I don’t come from Africa.

I owe the country in which I was born some consideration on this score.

America has farmland..and has the cheapest food in the world. Americans also have passports that are welcome everywhere. Indians don’t.

Ergo, my first consideration will be Indians who feel trapped by the current global situation.

However, anyone of whatever ethnic background or culture who’s lived more than ten years in India would get equal consideration..

    Principle of subsidiarity..

Plus – Indians do share things – just as Americans do..

They share history, geographic contiguity, nation-state father figures…cultural ties..

  3. I am from India and it is basically a slumdog country with Indians having really bad attitude and work ethics.

My conspiracy theory , they brought in Sonia who got Sanjay Gandhi killed who had realised the importance of family planning, now the population has exploded and a disaster of malthusian category has manifetsed. There is very little which can be done politically. Democracy is noisy and non reformist.

The country has denuded its natural resources and there is another round of echo boom coming. There is no beauty left to the country.

EM Forster described it in his books how Indians can live within filth and prosperity at the same time without even noticing it.

India is well protected from nature and enemies and they have a survivalist attitude so they would be ok, just dont look for prosperity in a western sense.

  4. Hi Kaus –

I understand your sense of despair.
I’ve heard other people involved in activism who feel that way..
    There are huge problems.

The Slum dog business is more a result of the way the Indian middle class (upper middle class) has glommed on to the worst things about the west..rather than the best – the hype, the glitz, the mad marketing and brand consciousness – in other words, the dregs of corporatist culture.
The good things have been passed by, as they are in the US too. It’s not only India. Look at eastern Europe – how quickly they became fodder for the worst side of corporatism..

Living in filth and prosperity..well I go back often and so I can say, what other choice do Indians have? They can keep their gardens clean but that’s all they can do, unless they are very wealthy or have political clout.
And eventually, to survive, you have to stop noticing.

Don’t Americans forget the pervasive violence on their TVs..? The pervasive war mongering? When you see something all the time, it desensitizes you. So I don’t blame Indians for it. But I do think the middle class should stop looking to the west for solutions, or approvals, or partnerships that give up so much for so little in return.

    They have to wise up.

It’s not just five dollar Starbucks in a country that has great coffee and tea..but embracing the drug companies, when India has so much to offer in terms of ayurveda and alternative health.
Everything about the West is not great. That’s a very colonial attitude.
The west has great political institutions (that it is rapidly debasing) but its thinking on cultural and social matters is irrelevant or outright inimical to much of the rest of the world.

India really has to stop making the approval of New York and DC the center of our universe.
