Top Ten Christian Libertarian Blogs

Greg at The Holy Cause lists the top 10 Christian libertarian blogs , with Lew Rockwell and the popular Pro Libertate making the cut among the blogs I follow.

Now Greg want to make another list of Christian libertarian blogs and invites nominees and suggestions. This sounds like an interesting way to get to know more bloggers out there. Here are Greg’s criteria:

(1) The blogger(s) openly professes Christianity, and includes biblical content at least occasionally in blog postings . This is a “big tent” as far as the definition of “Christian” is concerned.
(2) The blog has libertarian content as one of its main thrusts. This libertarian content may include activism, advocacy, commentary, debate, economics, education, persuasion, politics, research, etc. This too is a “big tent” but will of necessity be judged somewhat subjectively. An example – Father Hollywood easily qualifies, despite the fact that he has significant other content. It helps that his other content has a Christian thrust.
(3) The blog must have some longevity, being a minimum of 2 months old.
(4) The blog must show consistent and recent postings. “Consistent” means averaging at least one posting per week. “Recent” means at least two postings in the last month

  1. Thanks Lila!

It’s funny, I am a little challenged finding blogs which fit what I thought were pretty loose criteria. The two biggest “blockers” are #1 and #4.

    1) There are libertarian bloggers who claim to be Christian (and I have no reason to think otherwise), but put no “biblical” content on their site. Not judging, but it doesn’t meet the criteria of this list.

    4) Lots of blogs which got off to a great start – many months ago – without a post in the last several months. It just goes to show how it is a never-ending challenge to come up with new material.

If anyone has suggested “Christian libertarian” sites – meeting the criteria above – please let me know in the comments either here or here. I’d like this to be a really complete list.

    Greg

  2. Greg is exactly right. It’s a lot easier to just post links to other news articles than it is to do theological analysis on a regular basis. I had a lot of material to start out with, but lately I’ve been so busy that I haven’t put forth any larger articles. That’ll change this summer, though…

  3. Any serious thinking, research, and writing takes a lot of time. Of course, as a published author, Lila knows that about as well as anyone.

Both of you, Lila and Norman, do more original work than most Bloggers, and you are to be congratulated for that. That’s why you are in my RSS feeds.

  4. Greg –

Thanks…but often I can only write a few lines of comments where I’d actually like to do something more extended…

    It’s difficult, no question.

  5. Hi Greg –

    I’m so flattered! Thank you.

But you got me in trouble.

I’ll have you know that mentioning that you think of yourself as a Christian – even a liberal, non-exclusive, tolerant, non-fundamentalist, sophisticated, scientifically inclined, culturally diverse, skeptical, Judeophilic (I think the New Testament needs the Old Testament to clarify it) makes you suspect in some libertarian circles – right libertarian too….

But you can have an obsessive relationship with Mises and Rothbard, Rand, Mill, Marx, Freud, Adam Smith, or any one else all day long, communicate directly with them, treat their texts as sacrosanct and inviolable and excommunicate heretics from their gospel all day long – that doesn’t make you a fundamentalist – no.

  6. You made me laugh – literally!

I have been toying about writing about the libertarian obsessions with Rothbard and (especially) Rand, and now you have convinced me that I absolutely have to do that. Thanks!

I agree with your statement regarding the Old Testament, afterall Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi. Christ himself said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” Matthew 5:17
