I suspect that Chavez at his core is a caudillo–a populist leader in the Latin American tradiion. It was Cuadillos who nationalized the oil industry in Mexico in the 1930;s much to the chagrin of standard oil–you should have seen the demonization of the mexicans by the Hearst papers and the harangues in the congress! Strange how populism has died in the U.S. Obama while a symbol is like all the rest of the U.S. political leadership–beholden to economic interests and abstract ideas–but not plain people.
Brilliant–and oh so true!

Viva Chavez!
Peronism..
Strong man politics.
Ultimately it comes down to charisma, sex-appeal.
Look good while doing something, say appealing things, and the masses will follow you to the gallows or the gas chambers..
L–wow. You are on a tear–the thing is you are as usual correct.
I’m going to nationalize that quote.
