Sarah, the Runner

Nice piece here about Sarah Palin, as a runner.

I’ve never been a fan of the governor. But reading this, and seeing her take all the bashing in the press, I’m a beginning to have more-than-sneaking admiration for her spunk.

Apparently photographer  Nina Berman isn’t so impressed. She skips Palin’s five children and marathons in 20 below zero to rave instead over Newsweek’s recycling of a picture from the article into a not-so-subtle cheese-cake cover.

“Brilliant” she calls it, because it demeans Sarah, while giving Newsweek an out:

“The Newsweek cover is a shrewd strategic maneuver to demean Palin without having to take responsibility for it. I think it’s brilliant. They take an inelegantly, even laughably propped photo where Palin is an obvious participant as opposed to being a manipulated subject, and recontextualize it to show how far out she is willing to travel on the road of self promotion. They beat her at her own game and in the process shield themselves from what would have been the inevitable criticism if they had dolled her up themselves and posed her the same way.”

The strange moods of some feminists…
You’d think there was a surplus of women in office to treat them so cavalierly.
All we need now is some stripping down and greasing up to holler, “cat-fight!”

Ladies, please.… your motivation’s showing.

  1. Re: above youtube clip… haaahaha. But terribly tragic. I wonder if she, or politicians in general these days, have watched the 1980s U.K. tvshow “Yes Minister” (and took notes).

I also can’t help but feel really scared and sorry for you folks down there for voting for morons like her :\. I know it’s inherent in the system (to attract morons), but still, at least the morons up here in Canada pretend to be a little more sensible.

    Ladies, tear her apart! :b.

  2. Hi Dennis –

You’re missing the point. I didn’t vote for her and never would have. But bashing her in sexist terms doesn’t help at all. Everyone can see the double standards. It feeds into general misogyny and makes it harder for other women on the right to run…or women of any political persuasion for that matter.

The point of a standard is that it applies to everyone. Not voting for someone, debating their policies and resume is one thing. Constantly denigrating them personally in sexist terms is another. It’s really a distraction and does nothing but make her more popular..in case the “intelligentsia” hadn’t noticed..

  3. Palin would have demonstrated smarts to dismiss Newsweek sans reply. The YouTube clip referred to by JC Butte reveals the neocon warmonger mentality so prevalent in right wing christian circles (she even alluded to a theological bent concerning Jewish people “flocking” to Israel in the coming days, weeks, etc.). Palin showed a lack of reason, and critical thinking based on my view of that clip.

I guess the book sales and face time on the talk show circuit while raking in cash are what counts for now…..

  4. She’s for real. If the economy makes a double dip or worse, then watch her appeal grow and the moderate GOPers fumble into irrelevance.

Maybe she will be the person who realizes Gore Vidal’s prediction of dictatorship in America. Shades of Eva Peron. If we’ve been bad, then the schoolteacher will have to discipline us. Sure it’s more sexist stereotyping, but it’s part of a much larger drama (or the ultimate reality show) that America is determined to undertake.

Keep up the great work, Lila.

  5. well the ivy league educated people who say the offically approved things, conduct themselves in the officially approved way have not exactly done a yeomans job either. Its about class not so much sexism but classism. Very little out there on say Hillary Clinton flunking the D.C. bar exam, never doing any work just showing up and well the fact that she cannot speak in any meaningful or comprehensible way does not both anybody cuz well she went to Wellesly and Yale. That she tangles verbs nouns and just utters cliches bothers very few. Odd that. Or Joe Biden, ever had a listen to him for that matter? Why so many still believe the official version and attach value to ideas of neocon and the like is beyond my comprehension. Pick on the working class poll while the ivy league geniuses have destroyed the economy. Boy guys seems the brainwashing is having its desired effect!

  6. Hi Robert..

    Yes, classism at work.
I was noticing that the writing of communist community organizer Saul Alinksy has been in the media a lot lately..
and one of his “rules for radicals” is to avoid criticizing structures or corportions, but personalize and polarize..

That’s the strategy at work here..
    Lila

  7. Her bashing is very similar to what Hillary went through when she first came on the scene. Hillary is much more polished than Palin though.

There isnt much to Palin and her record as governor is horrific. Her time is running out though.

With that said, the left / Democrats will have a similar candidate (young, attractive, in a position of relative power) arise very soon.
