All this campus late-teen angst can be saved by realizing that no-one’s lives really “matter” in a grand world-historical sense.
Most human lives, with some exceptions, make very little difference in any way to the course of human history.
Your life only matters to you, mommy and daddy, and Jesus.
Maybe not even mommy and daddy.
Get over it.
How Insensitive! I hope the readers of this post have a “safe space” in which to convene and settle their collective nerves!
Lila you have in your typically succinct manner hit the nail on the head. The poison of self obsession.
All the best on this the most American (and pretty darn Christian as well) of holidays.
Thank you Keith and the same to you and yours.
I’m very fond of Thanksgiving too. It’s the only real American “culture” holiday we have. The rest are American “state” holidays. July 4th is the latter, although I admit that all the fireworks, air displays, and general state-centric patriotic fervor can infect non-Americans too. I’ve held a US passport for ages, but don’t subscribe to the liberal theory of citizenship. It goes to show how easy it is to stir up tribal in-group feeling and how cleverly and incessantly big gov. does it.
