Slouching Toward Austerity

Charles Hughes Smith at “Of Two Minds” blog describes the politics of resentment succinctly and ends:

“Now that the “housing never goes down” fantasy has imploded, the dwindling remains of the once-great middle class are slouching dejectedly through the ruins of the political center (which cannot hold because there is no center, only a State/Plutocracy Elite and a rabble of State dependents defending their fiefdoms), filled with bitter resentments at this undeserved plight–for isn’t this the Greatest Empire the World Has Ever Known?–beset by anxieties about the rough beasts (let us call them austerity, restraint, humility, responsibility, patience, sacrifice and thrift) whose hour has come round at last.”

  1. He is correct. It is but one of my fantasies exploding or on the verge of exploding. Everybody jammers on about economic problems and the various and sundry solutions. All nonsense. The collapse of housing, 401 (k), Obama and the whole enchildada are at one level awful but deeper these failures remove the core of the being of millions of americans–for cosnumption defines the culture–oh and voting and the greatest democracy…blah, blah……Economic collapse will burst many illusions and psyches, what this will make the real life in the U.S. (not the mediated one via tv or net) like in two or three years is sobering. Things are bad they say–what does this mean ? Well probably that there are 60-80 ruined lives and more to come. The ennui is worse now as most of us now know a one or more persons whose life and prospects have imploded. We are at the cusp of a tipping point……
