“The mass-man is one who has neither the force of intellect to apprehend the principles issuing in what we know as the humane life, nor the force of character to adhere to those principles steadily and strictly as laws of conduct; and because such people make up the great and overwhelming majority of mankind, they are called collectively the masses.”
— Albert J. Nock
[I had this down before as Alfred J., sorry…
For patient readers of this blog, no, I do not have dyslexia or ADD, as you might think from the strange ways I mangle names. I’m simply a recovering word-associationist. From years of writing poetry and playing music, I’m far more aural than visual. I posted something from Four Quartets a while back, and I think “Alfred J. Prufrock” was playing somewhere in the back of my mind]
At least, that’s my excuse.
The EU is going to help Greece as expected by those who know better. 30.000 is a nice round number in million euros to sustain the European dream intact. How good is to see intelligence still prevailing.
That’s sarcasm, I hope…
Sarcasm? I guess not. He’s right. It’s like washing the Augean stables, a very Greek thing, with a touch of hubrys perhaps. Alas !
Well – I do sympathize with the GK government and believe that the US banks were corrupt in selling some of those products.
But bailing the government doesn’t provide an incentive for people to behave responsibly.
You’re supposed to do due diligence, you know..
For innocents who’re affected, there could have been direct assistance of some other kind.
I’d make that same argument if the American or Indian government were involved.
If governments are lazy and corrupt themselves, blaming corporations and speculators even for what might be legitimate grievances is not a long-term solution at all.
Assistance to innocents, like those illegally taped, whose intimacy is sold in private sites in the internet? What kind of assistance will ever compensate that? Money is a substitute for blood, but not even blood suffices.
